ORIGIN AND PURPOSE
OF ANZAC DAY
Anzac Day was first held on 25 April 1916 to
honour the Anzacs (soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army
Corps) who had died at Gallipoli during or after the landing there on 25
April the previous year.
It has become a day to commemorate all
Australian and New Zealand soldiers who have served or died in wars,
other conflicts and peacekeeping operations and to acknowledge the
values displayed by the soldiers at Gallipoli.
